What is Reiki Reiki literally means Universal Life Force. It’s foundation is accredited to Mikao Usui (1865-1926), a Tendai Buddhist. Reiki is a way of working with and channelling universal energy in order to bring about increased energy levels and healing and help us to develop our own spiritual awareness.

Universal energy is called different things according to the practice. It is called chi in acupuncture where needles are placed along the meridian lines to promote a healthier flow of chi throughout the patient’s body. Tai Chi uses universal energy where the sequence of gentle controlled flowing movements helps to make you feel envigourated by increasing your intake of energy. Yoga practitioners call this energy prana but no matter what label we put on it it’s the same thing.
With Reiki this isn't the only way that the universal energy is viewed. Reiki energy also has divine origins and this is where we see the links with the point of view of spiritual healers, who draw down divine or spiritual healing energies. And because Reiki is not attached to any particular religious belief, it should be acceptable to all people whether they have no religious beliefs or very strongly held beliefs.
From an Eastern viewpoint energy does not just flow through us but is also all around us and is generated from all living forms. Interestingly traditional science is also arriving at this view through string theory which proposes that all matter is comprised of energy which vibrates at different frequencies.
A Reiki practitioner connects with and channels this universal energy and transfers it through their hands to the person, animal or object which they are working on.
